DARTMOUTH – Ongoing research, learning and community engagement efforts undertaken by University of Massachusetts Dartmouth were supported in Massachusetts’ fiscal year 2019 budget per a statement by the school Wednesday.
Four UMass Dartmouth initiatives included in the budget are $2.7 million to continue funding an ongoing lease of the College of Visual and Performing Arts in New Bedford and $80,000 for transportation costs related to the Leduc Center for Civic Engagement America Reads/Counts tutoring programs in New Bedford and Fall River.

This year marks the first time the university has received transportation funding for the tutoring program.
In addition, the budget included $450,000 in research funds to continue the School for Marine Science and Technology’s study of fisheries stock at the New Bedford-based facility as well as $100,000 for further research into the disease-fighting properties of cranberries – the Bay State’s official berry – for the Cranberry Health Research Center in Dartmouth.
Thanking the Baker-Polito administration, legislature and regional delegates, “for recognizing the value of UMass Dartmouth,” in a statement UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Robert E. Johnson said: “We are fortunate to live in a state where civil debate, bi-partisan problem-solving and forward thinking define our policy-making. … We look forward to working with our partners in government to continue building the region’s only Tier 1 national research university.”
