PROVIDENCE – The average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island increased 13 cents this week to $2.83 per gallon, 5 cents lower than the national average of $2.88 per gallon and 1 cent higher than gas prices at this time last year, according to AAA Northeast Monday.
Prices in Rhode Island ranged 36 cents from $2.63 to $2.99 per gallon.

“Compared to the beginning of the year, motorists have definitely felt an increasing squeeze on their wallets at the pump,” stated AAA Northeast Senior Vice President of Public and Government Affairs Lloyd Albert. “These increases mean Americans are having to work more to afford to fill up their gas tanks. AAA found that, nationally, Americans must work 22% longer than at the start of the year to buy one gallon of unleaded gasoline – that’s 7.3 minutes compared to 5.76 minutes in January.”
- Midgrade gas averaged $3.01 per gallon, ranging from $2.89 to $3.16 per gallon
- Premium gas averaged $3.22 per gallon, ranging from $3.09 to $3.35 per gallon
- Diesel fuel averaged $3.11 per gallon, ranging from $2.99 to $3.45 per gallon
In Massachusetts, the average price of regular gas increased 10 cents this week to $2.79 per gallon, 9 cents lower than the national average and 4 cents higher than at this time last year.
Prices for regular gas in Massachusetts ranged 52 cents from $2.57 to $3.09 per gallon.
