Preservation society to host symposium

PROVIDENCE – Imagine the future of the capital city next week at a symposium organized by the Providence Preservation Society.
On Sept. 15, the society kicks off the three-day conference Make No Little Plans: A Symposium on Visions for the City of Providence. The society says a group of speakers will trace the development of the city’s Capital City and then look toward the future, emphasizing the potential redevelopment of the Jewelry District.
“When we plan for new parts of the city, it’s our obligation to be as good – as elegant, as scaled, as livable – as the city we inherited,” society President James Hall said.
PPS says it invited panelists and speakers from architectural firms and development companies that contributed to the making of Capital Center and administrators from educational institutions expanding into the Jewelry District. Rounding out the speakers will be officials from the city. The society also plans to have historians conduct tours of significant relevant projects.
“The preservation movement today must not only have a memory; it must have Imagination,” Hall said. “Preservationists should lead prudent, sensitive planning to engender diverse, active, ‘green’ and unexpected cities.”
