MIDDLETOWN – People’s Credit Union closed all its branches for a day this month so employees could volunteer with more than a dozen Rhode Island nonprofits, schools and community organizations focused on mental health and community support.
The credit union’s third annual Day of Purpose, held Sept. 17, involved more than 500 hours of employee volunteer work. The credit union also held an all-branch Essentials Drive that collected more than 500 items for children and teenagers in supportive care.

“We closed every branch, so our team could spend a day supporting the people who do this work year-round,” CEO and President Sean Daly said in a statement.
Employees worked with organizations such as Child & Family, East Bay Community Action Program, Newport Mental Health, Lucy’s Hearth, the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Newport and the Potter League for Animals.
At Newport Mental Health, volunteers assembled 200 women’s hygiene kits and 200 sensory-care packages for children and teenagers using the organization’s inpatient and outpatient services. At EBCAP, employees prepared meals for behavioral health workers, assembled cleaning-supply buckets for residential clients and created cards for patients.
Other projects included helping maintain a pollinator meadow at the Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District’s AgInnovation Farm, assisting with adaptive yoga sessions through Shri Yoga and working with community police officers and their therapy dogs to visit seniors, children and others in the community.
People’s Credit Union, founded in 1922 and headquartered in Middletown, has 11 branches in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
