PROVIDENCE – Federal, state and local officials opened a new Broad Street apartment building for military veterans last week.
The 11 apartments on the site of a former Benny’s will soon become home to presently homeless or at-risk-of-becoming homeless veterans and their families, Rhode Island Housing said. The new building, called Turning Point, also hosts a Providence Police Department substation and a Rhode Island Veterans Action Center office, which plans to provide services such as job training and case management to veterans.
The $2.9 million project also includes two apartments in a renovated home on nearby Calla Street.
“I commend Rhode Island Housing and its partners on the opening of Turning Point,” Mayor Angel Taveras said. “Honoring and supporting our nation’s veterans must always be a priority. Along with several recent developments on Broad Street, Turning Point is an admirable project that will create new vitality, activity and public safety in the heart of South Providence.”
Money for the project came from the federal Neighborhood Stabilization HOME and McKinney Homeless programs. Additional money came from the Building Homes Rhode Island program, Rhode Island Housing and the city of Providence. The Corporation for Supportive Housing provided technical assistance and predevelopment money.
