SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The University of Rhode Island has started tearing down the four-building Terrace Apartments on the main campus to make way for a 429-bed dormitory.
Workers with AA Wrecking Co., based in Johnston, began demolition of the 54-bed Terrace complex late last month. It will be replaced by the dormitory Hillside Hall at the cost of $42 million, to be financed through revenue bonds paid off by student housing fees.
Hillside Hall will be the most energy-efficient residence on campus, URI said.
“Three years ago, we opened three new residences to address the needs of upperclassmen, and now we are embarking on a new facility that will enhance the freshman and sophomore experience,” said Chip Yensan, assistant vice president of student affairs and director of housing and residential life. “The goal in all of these projects is to create a more vital campus community through the development of energetic and connected neighborhoods.”
Robert A. Weygand, vice president of administration and finance, said, “The aging Terrace Apartments would have required major repairs, including major fire code upgrades. Such a process would not be cost-effective, nor would it address the need for many more on-campus residential units.” •
