WASHINGTON – New orders for manufactured durable goods decreased $17.1 billion or 7.8 percent in January to $203.9 billion, after rising 2.8 percent in December, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today.
Shipments of durable goods, which have risen in five of the last six months, increased $0.5 billion or 0.2 percent in January to $211.4 billion, after gaining 0.5 percent in December.

Durable goods inventories, which have risen in 12 of the last 13 months, increased $1.0 billion or 0.3 percent to $297.7 billion in January after rising 0.7 percent in December.
Among capital goods, the bureau said, nondefense new orders decreased 19.9 percent to $65.4 billion while defense new orders increased 10.7 percent to $8.8 billion.
