Although an increase in gasoline prices is an annual rite of spring, this year’s run-up has been the largest in more than a decade. However, analysts say prices could fall as refiners ramp up production and the price of oil stabilizes.
In its survey, AAA found prices in Rhode Island ranging from $2.31 to $2.49 per gallon for unleaded regular. (The survey, which usually comes out on Monday, was delayed until today because of the Memorial Day holiday.)
At $2.43, the average price per gallon in Rhode Island is 1 cent higher than the average price nationwide of $2.42. But the current average is still $1.53 less than the statewide average of $3.96 per gallon a year ago.
In Massachusetts, the survey found the average price of self-serve, unleaded regular was $2.35 per gallon, up nine cents from last week and 34 cents from a month ago, but seven cents below the national average.
At stations in Rhode Island this week, the survey found average self-serve prices of $2.55 per gallon for midgrade unleaded, $2.66 for premium unleaded gasoline, and $2.41 for diesel.
