PROVIDENCE – The Better Business Bureau is warning Rhode Islanders to watch out for a new phishing scam involving emails purporting to be from PayPal.
The scam involves someone sending fake PayPal payment confirmations via email, which come with harmful links containing malware. The malware is designed to infiltrate computers and look for sensitive information.

“Phishing scams look like legitimate emails, and they are getting more sophisticated every day,” according to BBB. “What these con artists are really after is your banking and financial information. And they won’t mind destroying your computer to get it.”
People should be wary of emails claiming to be from PayPal that include information about a recently sent payment. The email will come with an option to “cancel order,” which is the harmful link and should not be clicked.
BBB, a nonprofit advocate, recommends not clicking on any links from unexpected messages, to look for misspellings and be cautious of generic emails.
