PROVIDENCE – Brown University has raised more than $1.5 billion for its “Boldly Brown” capital campaign with seven months still to go.
Brown raised more than $26.5 million for the campaign in the first three months of this year alone, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported this week, bringing the total to just under $1.5 billion as of March 31.

By May 1, Brown said it had passed the $1.5 billion mark “thanks to significant leadership gifts and broad support from alumni, parents and friends.”
The capital campaign began in October 2005 with the goal of raising $1.4 billion by December 2010. That goal was reached by May 2009, more than a year and a half ahead of schedule.
“These results are without precedent in the university’s history,” Jerome C. Vascellaro, Brown’s vice chancellor and a national co-chair of the campaign, said at the time. “They demonstrate a deep loyalty to Brown and generosity of spirit that transcends even these difficult times.”
After reaching their initial target, Brown’s leaders said they hoped to raise an additional $275 million before the end of 2010 to fund financial aid, new faculty positions, capital projects and an expansion of the endowment. The school needs to raise roughly $175 million more to meet that goal.
