Bristol receives grant for sewage-flow project

PROVIDENCE – Bristol has received a grant award of $145,913 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a sewage back-flow-prevention project, the R.I. Emergency Management Agency said last week. The project is the first of its kind to be awarded through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program in the state.
Diane Mederos, Bristol town administrator, said that the funds will help prevent repeats of events such as the spring 2010 flooding, which caused sewage backup for many properties.
“This funding will allow the town to help these property owners with a retrofit of their existing sewer connections,” she said.
The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program provides grants to states and local governments to implement long-term hazard-mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration. Authorized under Section 404 of the Stafford Act and administered by FEMA, the program was created to reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters.
Overall, the state received approximately $11 million in hazard-mitigation assistance from FEMA as a result of the 2010 floods. &#8226
