DMV expects to start issuing REAL ID Act-compliant cards starting Dec. 3

CRANSTON – The R.I. Division of Motor Vehicles announced Tuesday that it expects to issue REAL ID Act-compliant identification cards starting Dec. 3, which, starting Oct. 1, 2020, will be required for domestic air travel and entry into certain federal facilities.

The REAL ID Act was passed in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, establishing minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

Rhode Island was one of 20 states that got an extension to come into compliance for the law in 2017.

Residents of states that did not get granted an extension or did not require one had to have a REAL ID compliant identification to fly domestically or to access certain government buildings starting in late January 2018.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, every traveler will need a REAL ID Act-compliant identification to fly within the United States.

The DMV also noted that due to the launch of the REAL ID computer system, it expects that motor vehicle services at AAA Northeast will be unavailable temporarily on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2.
