FALL RIVER – The City Pier Project will receive $2.2 million in state and federal funding to support environmental assessment, site stabilization and permitting for an undertaking slated to bring a marina and other uses to the blighted property.
The four-acre property, a brownfield site, was formerly used as a lumber yard, marina and construction-staging area for heavy equipment. PCBs have left the soil and sediment in the abandoned area contaminated. The redevelopment of the site is slated to include a 100-slip marina, including a pump-out facility, chandlery, office and boathouse.
The project will be financed through a combination of state and federal funds, including $150,000 from the Brownfields Redevelopment Fund administered by the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency for environmental assessment; $75,000 through the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection’s brownfield grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for sampling and analytical work at the City Pier site, and a $2 million award from the Governor’s Seaport Advisory Council in April. •
