WARWICK – Rhode Island’s National Resources Conservation Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has received $4.2 million in funding to preserve farmland in the Ocean State.
The funding, from the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program, is being made available to state and local governments, tribal leaders and non-government organizations.

“This program helps ensure that valuable, productive land is protected,” Rhode Island State Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Phoukham Vongkhamdy said in a statement. “The funds will be used to purchase conservation easements to limit conversion of farmland to non-agricultural uses.”
The funding is intended to protect soil, and historical and archeological sits by providing up to 50 percent of the appraised fair market value of a conservation easement.
NRCS will be accepting funding proposals until June 20 and will be judged by a “competitive process,” according to NRCS.
