PROVIDENCE – The average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island dropped to $3.33 per gallon on Monday, 12 cents less than last week but still 19 cents higher than the national average, according to AAA Northeast.

Monday’s R.I. average is 44 cents lower than a month ago and down 5 cents year over year.

“The cost of oil, gasoline’s main ingredient, has been hovering in the low-to-mid $70s per barrel, and that’s $50 less than the peak last spring,” said Diana Gugliotta, director of public affairs for AAA Northeast. “Combined with low seasonal demand, gas prices could slide a bit more before leveling off.”

Midgrade gas in Rhode Island averaged $3.97 per gallon on Monday.
