CRANSTON – Incumbent Kenneth J. Hopkins won the Republican mayoral primary and will face Democratic City Councilor Robert Ferri in November to remain the city’s top elected official. Hopkins defeated Rep. Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung in a primary election that saw only 20% voter turnout, slightly higher than the 10% turnout statewide. With all precincts reporting, Hopkins secured 3,588 votes, or 58.6%, to Fenton-Fung's 41.4% - 2,536 votes - according to results posted by the R.I. Board of Elections. Ferri ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. “It’s a great night for Cranston,” told WPRI-TV CBS 12. “We’re going to move forward and continue to do what we’ve been doing for the last four years.” Fenton-Fung did call Hopkins to concede but said the Cranston mayor did not pick up the phone. She also did not throw her support behind Hopkins in the November election in her concession speech. “I’ll be honest. I don’t, I can’t, feel like I can support anybody tonight … So I want to just keep my powder dry, and in the meantime, really wish everybody the best, and I hope that the general election is a lot more about policy than it was about some of these mailers,” Fenton-Fung told the Rhode Island Current. During the campaign, Fenton-Fung has called for the R.I. State Police and the R.I. attorney general's office to investigate a recent lawsuit that alleges the mayor took possession of a classic car without paying the owner for it. The Rhode Island Current reported the lawsuit that alleges Hopkins essentially drove away with a 1975 Morris Garage MGB Anniversary Edition and has yet to pay for or return the sports car to its owner. Hopkins, according to the Rhode Island Current report, has maintained he had a verbal agreement involving the ownership of the car and told the Globe the car story was a “prop” orchestrated for Fenton-Fung’s campaign, adding that the lawsuit is “meritless.” The story has even received national coverage on Jalopnik, a popular car news site.
