MIDDLETOWN – Mariners in North America, the Gulf of Mexico and Central America who use KVH Industries Inc.’s mini-VSAT Broadband system will now have increased network capacity, the company announced last week.
KVH and its partner, California-based ViaSat Inc., say they have increased network capacity in these regions by more than 500 percent with the installation of an additional full satellite transponder and a new spread spectrum waveform.

“Advancements in ViaSat’s ArcLight spread spectrum waveform combined with additional satellite capacity allow us to provide more than six times the bandwidth previously available in this region,” said Brent C. Bruun, vice president of KVH’s satellite sales and business development. “The additional capacity is especially critical in the Gulf of Mexico, where many mini-VSAT Broadband-equipped vessels are participating in oil spill recovery efforts.”
The KVH/ViaSat broadband network uses 11 satellite transponders and eight stations around the globe. KVH’s TracPhone V7 antenna is used by maritime vessels and other crafts to access voice and Internet broadband services.
The increased network capacity is expected to improve support for subscribers without requiring changes to the TracPhone V7 antenna.
KVH launched its mini-VSAT maritime communications service almost three years ago and expects to complete its thousandth sale soon.
