BOSTON – MBTA General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas announced last Thursday that the agency has partnered with Google Maps to add Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority schedule information to its trip-planning feature.
Information on R.I. Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) routes and schedules already was available on Google Maps, so the application now allows travelers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island to plan trips that use both systems.

“As America’s first and oldest transit agency, we strive to keep up with the latest technology,” Grabauskas said in a statement. “Joining Google Transit enhances our online information capability for people locally and abroad seeking transit options. With Google Transit, travelers unaware of the convenience of public transportation can do a search and choose for themselves.”
Steve Vinter, engineering director at Google’s Boston office, said in a statement the application would make trip-planning more convenient. “In addition to its benefits for commuters, Google Transit opens up new opportunities for exploring the region – for visitors on holiday, for new residents, and for all the students who will call the Boston area home this fall,” he said.
The application is available online and through a variety of Java-enabled mobile devices, including iPhones, Blackberrys, and Windows Mobile phones.
