Narragansett, West Warwick fire departments receive $289.7K for training, equipment

PROVIDENCE – The Narragansett and West Warwick Fire departments will receive a combined $289,720 in federal funding for training and equipment, U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse announced Friday along with U.S. Rep. James R. Langevin.

The funds come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

“I commend the Narragansett Fire Department and West Warwick Fire Department for their efforts to safeguard our communities and enhance public safety. I salute our firefighters and am pleased to help deliver these federal funds to help them do their jobs safely and efficiently,” said Reed in a statement.

The West Warwick Fire Department will receive $219,387 to fund training programs for national certification programs such as certifications for National Fire Protection Agency fire instructors, fire officers and incident safety officers, along with NFPA aerial operator certifications.

The Narragansett Fire Department will receive $70,333 to fund a new NFPA Fire Services Officer Training program to prepare firefighters for leadership and senior office positions. The department also will purchase air monitoring equipment.
