National industry association bestows award on Narragansett Bay Commission

PROVIDENCE – The Narragansett Bay Commission has picked up a national award from an industry group for its environmental monitoring.
The commission said last week that it won a National Environmental Achievement Award for excellence in operations from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies. The award is presented to members with outstanding projects, systems or methods relating to wastewater treatment operations.
The Narragansett Bay Commission operates two wastewater treatment facilities – one at Field’s Point in Providence and one at Bucklin Point in East Providence – and also manages the combined sewer overflow system in Providence. Since coming online in October 2008, the tunnel under Providence has captured more than 2 billion gallons of combined sewage and runoff and sent it to the Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility for treatment.
The national association hailed the commission for its monitoring of rivers and the upper part of Narragansett Bay to measure the success of the first phase of the overflow tunnel.
Raymond J. Marshall, the commission’s executive director, accepted the award at the association’s annual meeting on July 20.
