Naval station receives efficiency nod

WASHINGTON – The Department of the Navy recognized the U.S. Naval Station Newport last month for the base’s energy management practices.
The station’s commanding officer, Capt. Joseph Voboril, traveled to Washington on Oct. 27 to pick up the Secretary of the Navy’s Energy and Water Management Program Platinum Award. The station was one of just 12 to receive the honor.
During the 2008 fiscal year, the station upgraded its water distribution system, installed energy-efficient lighting, replaced steam distribution lines and put in an enhanced steam turbine. The station said those measures and other energy-management practices led to $1 million in annual savings.
Voboril received the award at the Heritage Center from Under Secretary of the Navy Robert O. Work.
