NCSA: Consumers should practice ‘digital spring cleaning’

PROVIDENCE – The National Cyber Security Alliance and Better Business Bureau have teamed up to urge consumers to practice “digital spring cleaning” to safeguard against identity theft and online financial crimes.

The group said about half of Americans still haven’t checked their credit reports since the 2017 Equifax breach, which exposed the Social Security numbers, birthdates and addresses of more than 140 million Americans.

“The average consumer is doing very little to protect their data,” said Russ Schrader, NCSA executive director. “Doing a digital spring cleaning will help keep your valuable information more secure and assist in protecting you against identity theft, which continues to be a top online safety concern.”

The groups urge consumers to review NCSA’s tips to “digitally declutter,” which can be found here.
