WARWICK – New England Institute of Technology on Tuesday was awarded a $2.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop a 36-month health information technology training program.
The grant is funded by the Department of Labor’s Community-Based Job Training Program. At New England Tech, it will provide the opportunity to improve the technical skills of medical employees while supporting the state’s effort to implement electronic health records.

U.S. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy said, “As Rhode Island continues to move forward toward economic recovery, ensuring that workers have the skills necessary for the jobs of tomorrow is just as important as creating the jobs themselves.”
The health information technology program to be developed at NEIT is expected to train 180 workers, and to create new entry-level job opportunities for unemployed residents in the Ocean State.
The DOL awarded $125 million in its fifth and final round of Community-Based Job Training Grants. Of the 323 applicants, 41 community colleges and organizations were chosen to receive the funding.
“I am pleased that New England Tech has won this competitive grant to prepare health care workers for advances in health information technology systems,” said U.S. Sen. Jack Reed. “This is a smart investment that will provide patients with better quality care in a more efficient, effective manner.”
