MICHAEL NULA’s company, Elite Physical Therapy, was recently recognized with an Achievement Worksite Health Award from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce for effective programs encouraging employee health and well-being in a meaningful way.
What sets Elite Physical Therapy apart from other employers in terms of employee health and well-being? Elite Physical Therapy is a group that leads by example. We want to inspire excellence in each other and in the people that we help or work with. We don’t look at employee health and well-being as just another program, task, or thing that we have to do. Instead, it is just a part of who we are. Our group all shares a common interest and passion to live a healthy life – that’s what brought us all together in this profession and company. It is also something that we love to help others achieve. When we feel good and are doing well, we are better equipped to help people fix their painful problems efficiently and effectively so they can improve their health and lives.
Why is employee well-being important for a business? Aside from the obvious health and wellness benefits, I believe it is a fantastic vehicle that provides activities that bring the group together to enjoy each other as a team with a shared common purpose and goals. Excellent employee well-being promotes a caring, fun, trusting culture of positivity, collaboration and unity that fosters a winning team environment.
Are businesses in the state doing enough to encourage employee wellness? I honestly can’t speak for other businesses in the state. However, based on there not being much promotion regarding this, I’d like to see more energy, communication, support and collaboration in this area.
Do employee-wellness programs work? How do you measure progress? Yes, absolutely. However, it is very important to select a few staff members to champion the team who are passionate and enthusiastic about being healthy. They must also have a fantastic way of engaging and motivating the team that results in great participation. Key metrics that measure progress include the percentage of staff participation, reduced number of used sick days and overall company production – a healthy company is a high-performing, growing company.
