NORTH KINGSTOWN – Ocean State Job Lot’s promotion and support of organ donation was recognized this month by a national nonprofit.

The discount retail chain was the first-ever recipient of the Donate Life Rhode Island Employer Award. The honor was presented to the company at its North Kingstown headquarters by Donate Life America, New England Donor Services and the Rhode Island Organ Donation Awareness Coalition.

Ocean State Job Lot employee and recent kidney transplant recipient Alison White accepted the award along with CEO Marc Perlman.

White was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 8 and placed on dialysis in 2017 before receiving a living-donor kidney transplant from her brother.

After the procedure, White shared her story with her fellow employees through Ocean State Job Lot’s Learn at Lunch program.

“Alison is a true inspiration to me and our entire company,” Perlman said. “Her transplant story has been shared with each of our 5,200 associates, and she’s been an incredible ambassador for the Donate Life organization.”

White said Donate Life America stood by her during the process.

“I am so thankful to Donate Life for their support and guidance throughout my procedure,” she said. “They not only helped me on my personal journey but helped me share my message with friends and colleagues to provide awareness and education about organ donation.”

Organ donations resulted in transplants for more than 22,000 people last year, according to Donate Life America.

April is National Donate Life Month.
