PROVIDENCE – The National Trust for Historic Preservation today named Providence as one of its annual Dozen Distinctive Destinations, saying the city has been reinvented through preservation-based revitalization and heritage tourism.

The 10 a.m. announcement was made at the Providence Biltmore Hotel by Mayor David N. Cicilline, together with hotel general manager Dan Williams and Martha Sheridan, president of the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The 12 winning communities all demonstrated “well-managed growth, a commitment to historic preservation with a protected historic core and meaningful context, interesting and attractive architecture, cultural diversity, activities for families with children, an economic base of locally-owned small businesses and walkability for residents and visitors,” the National Trust said.
