PROVIDENCE – Several fire departments in northern Rhode Island will receive $799,532 in federal Assistance to Firefighters Grants, United States Sens. Jack F. Reed and Sheldon T. Whitehouse announced today.

Lincoln’s Albion, Lime Rock, Manville, Quinville and Saylesville fire districts, along with Lincoln’s rescue department is receiving $388,637 to purchase new radios and mobile repeater units to enhance the speed and effectiveness of cross-departmental communications.

Seven fire departments – Smithfield, North Smithfield, Woonsocket, Lime Rock, Saylesville, Albion and Cumberland – will split a federal share of $203,500 to purchase a new firefighter accountability system to assist departments in keeping track of the location and condition of their firefighters while at emergency incidents.

With its $168,728 grant, the North Providence Fire Department will acquire new chest compression devices and automatic defibrillators to help their fire-based EMS engine and ladder companies earn Advanced Life Support licensing.

The Lime Rock Fire Department will receive $38,667 to modernize its technology with four new thermal imaging cameras to replace the department’s 15-year-old TICs.

Rhode Island first responders have secured more than $34 million in AFG funding since 2001, allowing them to pay for equipment upgrades, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources.

“This is a very competitive process, so I want to congratulate the departments on winning these grants,” said Sen. Reed.
