PROVIDENCE – The average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island declined 4 cents this week to $2.59 per gallon, level with the national average and 27 cents lower than prices at this time last year.

Prices ranged 47 cents from $2.32 to $2.79 per gallon.

  • Midgrade gas averaged $2.77 per gallon, ranging from $2.52 to $3.09 per gallon.
  • Premium gas averaged $2.97 per gallon, ranging from $2.72 to $3.19 per gallon.
  • Diesel fuel averaged $2.97 per gallon, ranging from $2.70 to $3.35 per gallon.

“For local travelers who are ending summer with road trips, gas prices are significantly less expensive than they were last Labor Day,” stated Diana Imondi, AAA Northeast manager of public affairs and traffic safety. “At the start of this week, two-thirds of all states have averages that are around a quarter cheaper than last year.”

In Massachusetts, the average price of regular gas declined 3 cents over the week to $2.60 per gallon, 1 cent higher than the national average and 24 cents lower than prices at this time last year.

Prices in the Bay State ranged 63 cents from $2.42 to $3.05 per gallon.

  • Midgrade gas averaged $2.88 per gallon, ranging from $2.65 to $3.25 per gallon.
  • Premium gas averaged $3.06 per gallon, ranging from $2.75 to $3.51 per gallon.
  • Diesel fuel averaged $2.95 per gallon, ranging from $2.67 to $3.39 per gallon.
