PROVIDENCE – A bill that would create a state infrastructure grant program, similar to the Mass Works program in the Bay State, has passed the R.I. Senate.

The proposed Rhode Island Municipal Infrastructure Grant Program is designed to provide help for cities and towns who want to expand housing and economic development but who need to fill holes in needed infrastructure first.

The program would authorize the state Department of Administration to issue public infrastructure grants for towns and cities and other public agencies for projects that support multifamily housing in walkable areas or support economic development in distressed communities.

It is patterned on Mass Works, a state program in Massachusetts. The measure was approved by the Senate April 6 and now moves to the House.
