CRANSTON – David N. Bazar, senior partner at the law firm of Bazar & Associates in East Providence, has been elected as president of the Rhode Island Bar Association.
Bazar, whose one-year term runs from July 1 to June 30, 2020, replaces Carolyn R. Barone, a family law attorney at Kirschenbaum Law Associates in Cranston, the association said Tuesday.

In his initial message to the association’s more than 6,500 members, Bazar, of East Greenwich, addressed what he called “the heart” of the legal profession.
“As lawyers, it is our ethical duty to zealously represent our clients; however, this does not require us to act without graciousness,” Bazar wrote in a recent statement on the association’s website.
“Rhode Island is a small state; acting with courtesy to our clients, other lawyers and the judiciary is not only the right thing to do, it is a requirement,” he added. “May we set an example for others that society is best served by people listening to each other and being compassionate and thoughtful.”
Richard P. D’ Addario, a solo practitioner at One Courthouse Square in Newport, was elected to follow Bazar as the association’s next president, with a term running from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021.
In addition, Lynda L. Laing, a partner at the law firm of Strauss, Factor, Laing & Lyons in Providence, was elected as the association’s current treasurer.
Mark B. Morse, who has served as research editor for the New England Law Review and editor in chief of the Rhode Island Bar Journal, was elected as the association’s current secretary.
