PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island have fallen for the third week in a row as drivers prepare to hit the roads for Thanksgiving, AAA Southern New England reported Monday.

The auto club’s Nov. 23 survey found the average price of self-serve, unleaded regular at Ocean State stations was $2.66 per gallon, a penny less than last week.

Crude oil prices rose on Monday as investors sought to offset the declining value of the U.S. dollar, Bloomberg News reported. Oil reached as much as $78.52 a barrel in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange after falling to a one-week low of $77.47 on Friday.

Crude oil has been trading in a range between $75 and $80 a barrel in recent weeks.

“The market’s looking ahead in terms of recovery in demand for oil and products, and there’s also the currency element,” Toby Hassall, research analyst with CWA Global Markets Pty in Sydney, Australia, told Bloomberg. “The downward trend remains in the greenback.”

In its survey, AAA found prices in Rhode Island ranging from $2.58 to $2.82 per gallon for unleaded regular. At $2.66, the average price per gallon in Rhode Island is 2 cents higher than the average price nationwide of $2.64.

A year ago, gas prices in Rhode Island stood at $1.92 per gallon, 74 cents less than the current average, according to AAA.

The AAA survey found prices unchanged in Massachusetts, with the average price of self-serve, unleaded regular still at $2.61 per gallon in the Bay State, 5 cents below Rhode Island’s average.

At stations in Rhode Island this week, the survey found average self-serve prices of $2.81 per gallon for midgrade unleaded, $2.92 for premium unleaded gasoline, and $2.88 for diesel.
