CollegeSurfing listed and ranked the 50 schools it believed were the biggest social media innovators in higher education. “From active Twitter feeds and fan-packed Facebook pages to creative YouTube videos and compelling blogs, here are the 50 schools that captivated us with their social media savvy,” it said.

What set RISD apart from other schools, according to CollegeSurfing, was RISD President John Maeda’s use of social technology. Maeda, who was associate director of research at the MIT Media Lab before joining RISD, also runs a Twitter account and served as a keynote speaker at the Web 2.0 Expo last year.

“RISD’s official Twitter account is certainly respectable, but President John Maeda’s feed is the one to watch,” the Web site reads. “The prez’s feed is full of pithy epithets like this: ‘Friends are the fabric softener in an otherwise heavy-duty wash cycle of life.’ … Does he make this stuff up?”
