PROVIDENCE – Mayor David N. Cicilline, Parks Supt. Alix R. Ogden and other dignitaries today joined in opening the new conservancy at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center.
Free gifts were on hand for the first 100 visitors to enter the glass building after the 11 a.m. ribbon-cutting. The conservatory’s 12,000 square feet feature waterfalls and such tropical plants as palm trees, orchids and birds of paradise.

The new center was born of a collaboration between 12 partner organizations, including the Rhode Island Rose Society, the Rhode Island Orchid Society, the New England Carnivorous Plant Society and the Master Gardeners.
Besides the largest indoor public display garden in New England, the Botanical Center also includes classroom, lecture and event space. The $7.7 million project was financed with city, state and federal money and the support of the Champlin Foundations.
Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children ages 6 to 12 and free to children 5 and younger.
