Six R.I. high schools earn national recognition

Six Rhode Island schools recently appeared on the U.S. News & World Report’s inaugural “Best High School” list.
Barrington High School, North Kingstown High School and Classical High School in Providence each received a silver-medal designation for students’ academic performance.
Textron Chamber of Commerce Academy, a Providence charter high school; Beacon Charter School, a Woonsocket charter high school; and Davies Career and Technical High School in Lincoln each received a bronze designation.
No Rhode Island high school received a gold medal in the nationwide list.
U.S. News & World Report, in conjunction with School Evaluation Services, a K-12 education and data research firm operated by Standard & Poor’s, analyzed the academic and enrollment data of nearly 19,000 public high schools nationwide. The results of state standardized testing from 2005-2006, the math and reading proficiency rates of each school’s black, Hispanic and low-income students compared with the average performed by similar students statewide, and student performance on advancement-placement tests were among the criteria reviewed. U.S. News selected a total of 1,086 winners.
