Stop & Shop EFT units tampered with in R.I.

QUINCY, Mass. – The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. has discovered tampering with two personal identification number (PIN) pads at checkout lanes in stores in Coventry and Cranston.

In early February, account and PINs associated with some credit and debit cards used at one electronic funds transfer unit at 900 Tiogue Ave. in Coventry and another at 200 Atwood Ave. in Cranston were stolen.

Stop & Shop said it is working with police and the U.S. Secret Service to determine the extent of the crime and help apprehend those responsible. The company has also contacted its credit and debit processors and business partners to identify and protect affected customer accounts.

Stop & Shop’s investigation has also discovered evidence of tampering in stores at 605 Metacom Ave. in Bristol, 333 West River St. in Providence, 300 Quaker Lane in Warwick, and 125 Highland Ave. in Seekonk, Mass. However, no fraudulent transactions at these locations have been reported, the company said.

Since the discovery of tampering, Stop & Shop has performed an inspection of EFT units in all its stores and has taken steps to ensure the units are secure.
