Two local students win regional entrepreneurship competition

PROVIDENCE – Two local students won top spots at the 2017 New England Regional Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, the education nonprofit Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship announced Wednesday.

Allison Pereira, a student at New Bedford High School, and Keegan Bonds-Harmon, a student at the Providence Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, the Met School, both won $1,000 for their plans and will be entering the National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in New York City in October.

Pereira will represent the New England region with her plan for Equality Storybooks, children’s fantasy and adventure picture books with characters of diverse race, ethnicity, religion, gender and geography that also feature a factual description of current and historical events.

Bonds-Harmon will represent the Southern New England region for Keegancreatures, handmade designs on shirts with a focus on artistry and creativity that “maximizes self-expression” to “combats fast fashion culture.”

More than 17,000 students created and pitched business plans in NFTE classrooms nationwide. Forty-one students representing 32 businesses will present their projects to a panel of judges on Oct. 12 in New York City. The prize pool is nearly $35,000, with $10,000 for the winning project.
