SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Fraternity and sorority members at the University of Rhode Island raised $137,000 during the university’s Philanthropy Week to assist local charities and people in need during the holiday season.

URI says the funds raised will support the Jonnycake Center for Hope, Washington County VFW Post 916 and Toys for Tots. The university said the funds were raised between Nov. 14-18. Some of the events the sorority and fraternity members put on to help raise money included a dance competition and games such as powderpuff football, capture the flag, Jeopardy and Minute to Win It, URI said.

“For me, taking on community service has always been important, and that’s why I took the vice president of philanthropy role,” said Samantha Salerno, vice president of philanthropy and service for URI’s Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council, in a statement. “It’s important to show the contributions of the Greek Community and the positive impact we have and how we can help people.”
