Verizon awards education-related grants

EAST PROVIDENCE – The Verizon Foundation awarded $50,000 in grants to four Rhode Island school districts and two educational organizations last Wednesday in a ceremony held at the East Providence Career and Technical Academy.
The grants were issued as part of the 2010 Think Ahead with Verizon Thinkfinity Awards, which recognize schools that use Verizon Thinkfinity’s online education program to help students improve academically.
The Met School received a $10,000 grant, and East Providence High School, Johnston High School and the Scituate school department each received $5,000 grants. The schools have all designed classroom projects that incorporate resources from Verizon Thinkfinity.
“We are impressed with the creative ideas that focus on the critical need to improve certain skills among students,” said Verizon Region President Donna Cupelo at the awards ceremony. “Verizon is dedicated to helping students strengthen their skills so that they are prepared to succeed in higher-education programs and careers.”
Additionally, the Verizon Foundation awarded $25,000 to the R.I. Department of Education and the Rhode Island Network for Educational Technology. This is the second year that the two organizations, designated state partners of Verizon Foundation’s Thinkfinity, have received the grant.
Thinkfinity.org is an innovative tool that provides educators with creative, interactive resources to enhance the curriculum and improve student learning,” said Carolyn Dias, chief of fiscal integrity and efficiencies at RIDE.

Thinkfinity is a free, educational website with content provided through a partnership between the Verizon Foundation and 11 national education and literacy organizations. The site includes lesson plans, activities and homework for various grade levels and subjects.
