PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is the seventh-best state in the nation for working from home, according to WalletHub. The personal finance website based in Washington, D.C., compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across two key dimensions, “Work Environment” and “Living Environment.” Both of those dimensions were evaluated using 12 metrics graded on a 100-point scale: share of workers working from home, share of telecommuters, households’ internet access, cybersecurity, average retail price of electricity, access to wired, low-priced internet plan, internet cost, median square footage per average number of persons in a household, share of detached housing units, average home square footage, share of homes for sale with lots greater than 1,000 square feet and share of homes for sale with swimming pools. Data used for the study was collected as of March 9 from the U.S. Census Bureau, Global Workplace Analytics, HighSpeedInternet.com, Internet Crime Complaint Center, Wakefield Research, U.S. Energy Information Administration, BroadbandNow, Allconnect, Realtor.com and Zillow. The study scored Rhode Island seventh for work environment and 20th for living environment, for an overall score of 64.92. Also, according to the report, Rhode Island is No. 4 overall for cybersecurity, No. 9 for households with internet access, No. 10 for overall cost, No.16 for share of potential telecommuters, No. 27 for average square footage and No. 28 for share of population working from home. Last year, Rhode Island ranked No. 12 overall after being No. 14 in both 2024 and 2023. Utah is the best state to work from home, according to Wallethub. That state ranked first for living environment and No. 9 for work environment. Delaware was second followed by Connecticut, Maryland and Massachusetts. Alaska is the worst state to work from home, according to WalletHub. That state ranked last in both work environment and living environment.
