Warwick to install high-efficiency lighting in municipal buildings

WARWICK – Municipal buildings will benefit from cost savings after funding for high-efficiency lighting will make 22 buildings more environmentally friendly, Mayor Scott Avedisian announced on Oct. 18.
More than 6,400 fixtures will be retrofitted with high-efficiency lighting in a project funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and an $830,200 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
The lighting installation is part of a broader energy retrofit and renewable energy program designed to reduce utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions at city-owned facilities and infrastructure, the mayor’s office said in a news release.
The city’s program, under advisement by Honeywell, will decrease carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 171 metric tons per year and save an estimated 433,000 kilowatt-hours per year.
The work will not increase city budgets or require additional taxpayer dollars because Honeywell guarantees approximately $1.02 million in annual energy and operations savings as a result of the lighting upgrades.
The conservation measures are expected to be completed this year; the city is also planning a second phase of improvements.
