NEWPORT – The Wyndham Estate at 36 Beacon Hill Rd. in Newport sold for $4.4 million, Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty announced Friday.

The sale is the second-highest sale in the state this year, according to Rhode Island Statewide Multiple Listing Service data.

The sellers were represented by Kate Kirby Greenman of Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty, while the buyers were represented by Michael J. Sweeney with Mott & Chace Sotheby’s International Realty.

The estate was designed by William Ralph Emerson, cousin of American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, who fitted the 14,022-square-foot mansion with eight bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and two half-bathrooms, a library and a ballroom. The house also includes a home theater, chef’s kitchen, and custom millwork and ceiling frescoes, as well as gated entry and a man-made pond.

The stone, three-floor Wyndham Estate mansion was originally built in 1890 and was restored this century. The 11.7 acre property sits at the highest point in Newport

The mansion was most recently occupied by gubernatorial candidate Giovanni Feroce. Feroce bought the property in 2014 for $6.8 million while he was the CEO of Alex and Ani LLC. When he put the property on the market, his original asking price was $12.9 million. The home was auctioned for $4.17 million in November to Coastway Community Bank.
