YMCA of Greater Providence projects savings from virtual net metering

PROVIDENCE – The YMCA of Greater Providence has signed a deal through National Grid’s Virtual Net Metering Program that is expected to save the organization more than $3 million on electricity costs over 25 years, the organization announced on Tuesday.

The deal was signed with Green Development LLC. It will allow the YMCA of Greater Providence to purchase renewable energy credits from offsite solar projects and apply those credits to its electricity bills. Savings are estimated to be $130,000 per year.

The YMCA entered the deal under the guidance of Balanced Rock Energy, an energy consulting and advisory firm.

“As a mission-driven nonprofit, we are always looking for ways to promote the health of our members, the local community, and our environment, while also keeping a close eye on our costs,” Steven G. O’Donnell, YMCA of Greater Providence CEO, said in a statement. “Balanced Rock Energy showed how we could advance our mission by supporting clean power generation and leverage our status as a nonprofit to reduce our overall energy expenditures,” he said.
