PROVIDENCE – Brenda Dann-Messier, president and CEO of Dorcus Place Adult & Family Learning Center, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to be assistant secretary for vocational and adult education at the U.S. Department of Education.
If confirmed, it would be the second time Dann-Messier would take a post with the federal Department of Education. She had served during the Clinton administration as regional representative in Boston.
Dann-Messier leads Dorcas Place, which provides education and job- placement services, preparatory classes for college and literacy programs for families receiving welfare payments.
Previously, she worked at the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University. She is a member of the R.I. Board of Governors for Higher Education and chairs the academic and student affairs subcommittee for the board. •
