PROVIDENCE – Brenda Dann-Messier, president and CEO of Dorcus Place Adult & Family Learning Center, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to be assistant secretary for vocational and adult education at the U.S. Department of Education.

Dann-Messier leads Dorcas Place, which provides education and job- placement services, preparatory classes for college and literacy programs for families receiving welfare payments.

Previously, she worked at the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University. She is a member of the R.I. Board of Governors for Higher Education and chairs the academic and student affairs subcommittee for the board. •
