2 Providence restaurants among Bon Appetit’s top 50 new eateries in U.S.

PROVIDENCE – Two Rhode Island eateries were named among Bon Appetit’s Top 50 Nominees for America’s Best New Restaurants 2019.

Aleppo Sweets and Big King were named among the 50 honored and were two of four New England restaurants named to the list this year.

Aleppo Sweets is a Syrian bakery specializing in baklava headed by baker Youssef Akhtarini. Bon Appetit reference’s the restaurant’s baklavas as “best-in-class.”

Big King is the restaurant by chef James Mark (the local acclaimed chef is known for his restaurant north) in north’s former location at 3 Luongo Square in Providence. North has since relocated to space in the Dean Hotel.

The other two nominees from New England were Boston-area restaurants DakZen and Tawakal Halal Café.

The 50 nominees will be considered for the magazine’s “Hot 10” designation later in September.
