3 R.I. companies make WSJ’s Management 250 list

PROVIDENCE – Three Rhode Island headquartered companies were named to the Wall Street Journal and the Drucker Institute’s 2018 Management Top 250 list released Friday.

Hasbro Inc. was the highest-rated of the three Ocean State companies, over CVS Health Corp. and Textron Inc.

Companies were evaluated on 37 indicators sorted into five categories – customer satisfaction, employee engagement and development, innovation, social responsibility, and financial strength. Each group score was reflected in a one- to five-star rating.

This year Apple Inc. ranked No. 1 with a perfect score of 100.

At the lead of Rhode Island-institutions, Hasbro ranked No. 77 this year with an index score of 62.7. The Pawtucket-based toy and entertainment company received three stars for customer satisfaction, four stars for employee engagement and development, three stars for innovation, four stars for social responsibility and five stars for financial strength.

CVS was the second-highest ranked Rhode Island company at No. 220 with a score of 54.3 with the following collated grades:

  • Customer satisfaction – four stars
  • Employee engagement and development: two stars
  • Innovation: four stars
  • Social responsibility: five stars
  • Financial strength: three stars

Textron was the third-highest ranked company in Rhode Island at No. 230 this year with a score of 54, with the following categorical grades:

  • Customer satisfaction : four stars
  • Employee engagement and development: three stars
  • Innovation: four stars
  • Social responsibility: three stars
  • Financial strength: three stars

There were also several companies ranked on the list with significant operations in Rhode Island and Bristol County, Mass., including:

  • Amazon.com Inc. – No. 2
  • General Electric Co. – No. 18
  • Walmart Stores Inc. – No. 23
  • JPMorgan Chase & Co. – No. 27
  • Verizon Communications Inc. – No. 45
  • Amgen Inc. – No. 47
  • Bank of America Corp. – No. 59
  • Raytheon Co. – No. 79
  • Tiffany & Co. – No. 58
  • CBRE Group Inc. – No. 167
  • Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. – No. 170

To be included in the study, companies met the following criteria: they were a part of the Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index or the Standard & Poor’s Composite 1500 Index (or both) and also had stock that was a component of the S&P 500 index, had a stock-market capitalization of $10 billion when snapshots were taken for the Drucker study in June 2018 or had at least $3 billion in revenue as of March 2018, according to the Wall Street Journal.
