PROVIDENCE – Effective July 1, four long-term Rhode Island School of Design faculty members were promoted to positions of leadership, one of which is a new role, according to a July 7 announcement by the Providence-based arts school.
Daniel Cavicchi, former dean of liberal arts who has worked at RISD since 1996, was named associate provost of Research|Global|Practice – a new position at the university that oversees continuing education, executive education, RISD Global, partnered projects and RISD Careers. In this role, Cavicchi will collaborate with existing staff to develop “interdepartmental synergies and strategic cross-disciplinary plans,” according to the release.

With Cavicchi exiting as dean of liberal arts, professor Damian White, a sociologist and political theorist, has been appointed to that position. Previously, White served as head of the history, philosophy and social sciences department (2012-2016) and was involved in the creation of the interdisciplinary nature-culture-sustainability studies program in 2012.
In addition, Scheri Fultineer, a professor of landscape architecture who has led the department for the past six years, will take over as dean of architecture and design. Fultineer replaces Nancy Skolos, who has held the position for two years, one as interim dean.
Emily Vogler, assistant professor of landscape architecture, will now head the graduate-level department.
The final element of the multipart shift in leadership is the appointment of Robert Brinkerhoff, an illustration professor and former illustration department head, to the role of dean of fine arts. He takes over for former dean Sheri Wills, who, according to the release, shifted to a teaching role.
