
PROVIDENCE – The violent crime rate in Rhode Island decreased 1.5 percent year over year to 238.9 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2016, according to the Crime in the United States, 2016 report by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice, which was released Monday. The same number of murders, 29, occurred across the state in 2015 and 2016.
The same report said that the violent crime rate in the state increased over the decade, however, climbing 5 percent since 2006, when 15 murders were committed.

The property crime rate in Rhode Island increased slightly, 0.06 percent, year over year to 1,898.7 per 100,000 residents, but declined 26.6 percent from 2006, when the property crime rate was 2,586.9 property crimes per 100,000 residents.
In 2016 in Rhode Island, there were 2,524 violent crimes – including murder and manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault – and 20,058 property crimes – including burglary, larceny/theft and motor vehicle theft – known to law enforcement.
Nationally, the violent crime rate increased 3.5 percent year over year in 2016, while property crimes declined 2 percent. Over 10 years, the national violent crime rate declined 18.4 percent while the property crime rate declined 26.5 percent.
