MIDDLETOWN – People’s Credit Union received first place in Rhode Island for the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award, the credit union announced Oct. 19.
The award was established by the Credit Union National Association to “recognize leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of financial literacy for all ages,” according to a press release.

PCU was honored for its partnership with North Kingstown High School, where it sponsors the Rhode Island Financial Scholars Program at no cost to the school. The program is a web-based financial literacy platform, powered by EverFi, which provides “critical skills education opportunities to students.” In addition, PCU has worked with business and finance teacher Richard Garland to implement financial literacy coursework into the curriculum and expand financial literacy into other school programs.
Recognized in the $250 million to $1 billion asset category at the state level, PCU’s winning entry will go on to the national competition.
