PROVIDENCE – The Providence Housing Authority will receive technical assistance in increasing access to its units for people with a history of criminal convictions from the Vera Institute of Justice, a nonprofit organization based in New York City.
The housing authority is among five similar agencies in the U.S., including one in Springfield, Mass., to receive the help, according to a news release.

The initiative is intended to help housing authorities who want to plan and implement re-entry-focused housing programs, or to change their admissions policies. The Providence Housing Authority updated its admission policy this year.
It owns and manages 2,606 units of public housing and is the contract administrator for another 2,500 units in Section 8 housing.
