PROVIDENCE – The Champlin Foundation has awarded the Providence Community Library a $544,800 grant to repair, renovate and preserve the facade of its Knight Memorial Library branch, according to a Monday announcement by the nonprofit group.
Library director, Jeffrey Cannell, said in a statement, the scheduled renovations are the first “major work on the exterior” of the facility since its construction in 1922.

In his prepared statement he added: “We are delighted that we can now schedule more extensive repair work on this beautiful building. … It’s a boost for the entire neighborhood.”
Work on the historic building will commence in Spring 2018 and focus on exterior masonry as well as repairs to the roof, gutters, cornice and skylights. The announcement of additional renovations comes two months after the branch re-opened after being closed from July to October of this year for “urgent repairs,” according to the release.
A library spokeswoman said the renovations are “anticipated” to last between three and four months and the facility will remain open during that time.
